Renal Research

So many fundraisers have been done in aid of the Kidney Fund that it is impossible to mention them all. Below is an example of the events that have been held.

In addition to events we have pictured below, three employees of Maclaren Racing Cars did a 5K swimathon; John and Valerie Canning 'Opened Their Garden' again in the spring of 2006; Sheila Webb donated the proceeds from a 'History Walk around Tolworth' and computer lessons she is giving; Patricia Dreidger's children made donations to the Fund in lieu of a 70th birthday gift; Ivor Astley held a hugely successful benefit night at Tone's Bar in Cheam (Ivor's son sang 'Rat Pack'); John Canning and members of staff at the National Blood Service Offices held a craft fair in aid of the Fund; the South West Thames Renal Unit's Transplant Team held Summer & Autumn dances; Keith Michel, Samantha Donovan and friends organised an 'auction, pool match and barbeque' at the Panther Pub in Reigate; The Book People in Godalming, Surrey held their annual 'Loud Shirt Day' in aid of the Kidney Fund; the regulars at the Sportman Pub in Kingswood donated proceeds from the Quiz Nights and Christmas raffle; AGI Labels in Littlehampton, W Sussex, and Paragon Employment Services in Camberley, Surrey made the Kidney Fund the beneficiary of their 'Christmas Card and Gift Fund'; Karen English asked for donations to the Fund in place of gifts for her '30th birthday'; and Mr Dennis Amy sells his very popular homemade marmalade and chutney every year. There have been many other wonderful fundraising efforts - too many to mention all of them. It has been a great year! Thank you to each and everyone for all of these creative and successful fundraisers!

'Four Peaks Challenges'

Many thanks to Steve Lamb who climbed the 4 highest peaks in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in aid of the Kidney Fund starting in Scotland on 2 June 2006 and finishing in Ireland on 5 June 2006. This is a continuous walking challenge of approximately 31 miles with little or no rest apart from the time spent riding in the coach between mountains - but the views are great! Steve's employer BP matched the amount he raised. Thanks to BP!

'Dropouts Fundraising Concert'

When Sarah Gibbs, a 21 year old who is on dialysis went to an Osmond Brothers concert, Lead guitarist Gene Puckett formed a friendship with Sarah Gibbs, and after getting to know her decided that he and his new band wanted to do something to raise funds for Renal Research. They held a concert in Kingston on July 14, and are planning another fundraising event in their home state of Missouri, USA in the near future.

'Fire Walks'

Fifty valiant volunteers took part in our second Fire Walk in October 2006. (We held our first fire walk in November 2003). As they walked on red hot coals burning at 1200 degrees farenheit, the walkers once again proved the old adage: 'courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to operate in spite of fear'

Over £16,000 was raised!

'Marathons'

Our 8 strong team raised an incredible £93,000 in the 2006 London Marathon. Our thanks go out to (pictured from left to right) Adam Barratt, Rob Adnitt, Steve Marsh, Mary-Kay Sheehy, Carole Lamb, Jonathan Kwan, Thomas Rhind, Ajay Bhalla

They started in Oxford and after 6 long days of rowing a distance of 100 river miles, Paul Mansell, Dan Batterton, Jack Mayhew (and Hector) arrived in Kingston unscathed except for their blistered hands. The weather was kind to them, and the three men in their boat were kind enough to raise £700 for the Kidney Fund!

'Party to Celebrate Life'

As a way of 'giving something back', and a thank you for the kindness shown by all of the doctors and nurses at St Helier during her stay at the hospital, Joanne Reed decided to arrange a fund raising party in October for all her family and friends. She received many donations for auction from various companies and individuals. In addition, Joanne's sister and brother in law ran the Cardiff marathon for the Kidney Fund and in all, they raised a staggering £5,700.00
